Right now there is a great brochure/event calendar on new music in Chicago. It's available in all the usual cultural brochure outlets (i.e., grab a coffee). This effort was put out by an encouragingly diverse consortium of new music organizations operating under the umbrella: New Music Chicago. You can also find them online at New Music Chicago.com.
What is new music? New Music Chicago> calls it "contemporary art music of all genres." The presence of the AACM, a legendary cutting edge jazz organization, in the membership alongside more "classically" instrumented groups such as CUBE, Dal Niente or the Chicago Chamber Musicians, is a positive sign that New Music Chicago will truly represent a diversity of art music genres.
Growing future talent is important for the future of any area of the arts in Chicago. To this end, New Music Chicago member The Chicago Chamber Musicians (CCM) has announced the winner of the ensemble's first Chamber Music Composition Competition for composers age 32 and under. Kyle Werner's Blueprints (2007) was chosen by the ensemble from 64 entries from throughout the United States, Germany, France, Italy and Canada. Blueprints will make its Chicago premiere at the final concert of CCM's Freshly Scored series on June 2, 2008 on a program that includes Pulitzer Prize recipient Steven Stucky and Stoeger Prize-winner Pierre Jalbert. You can find more information at the Chicago Chamber Musician's Web site.
